You’re super excited, you’ve bought a house, what next?

It’s one thing to buy a house, it’s another thing to turn that house into a home.

The excitement that comes with buying a house is awesome, but if you don’t have the slightest idea about maintaining it and turning it into a great home, you may be frustrated.

Don’t fret, in this blog post, my aim is to help you understand how to maintain your home, turn it into a wholesome place of living for you and your family.

Let’s dive in!

The maintenance of a house is like running a frequent service on a car, or a regular check up on one’s health.

Caring for a house seems like a difficult task to carry, but with the necessary tools and frequent checkups, you’ll find it really easy.

Regardless of the conditions that may hinder you from caring for your house, it’s pertinent to run a proper schedule for the upkeep.

In that regard, here are 8 tips that’ll help you turn your house around.

Here are 8 Home Maintenance Tips to Help Turn Your House into a Home

1. Run an Inspection Prior to Purchase

It is important to run a thorough inspection before buying a home. If you’ve tried to rent an apartment in Nigeria, you’ll agree with me that some agents will try to sell you on houses that are not even close to okay.

Before you buy a house, ensure that you go to the location and look around. Look at the environment, the compound, the building itself. Go inside and inspect the appliances. Do your due diligence.

Doing this helps minimize the budget and cuts down costs of repairs. In addition, get accurate information about the durability and lifespan of some primary systems in the house. Eg. roofs, tanks, etc…

2. Schedule Inspections

Say you are busy and can’t go around inspecting houses, schedule time for inspection. This helps you save time and money.

And if you’re trying to sell a house, don’t wait till the last minute before hiring people to do an in-depth inspection.

House inspections should be done regularly. That should be avoided because any delay could attract extra cost if a new issue is detected.

3. Comprehensive Maintenance

When we say run inspections, we mean that you should do a comprehensive checkup.

Keep an eye on materials and equipment in your house, don’t wait till appliances have become completely damaged before repairing them.

Run pest control every time as well.

4. Monitor Drainage

These days, people just sit by and watch as their drainage run down the streets. The sights are so appalling.

Constantly monitoring your drainage prevents it from overflowing into the streets and causing terrible pollution.

The amount of money exchanged for the value of clearing and caring for drainage is a great deal. So, hire an experienced company for this job.

5. Manage Your Roofings

In many cases, I’ve seen situations where water passes through the roofs and into people’s homes.

This is not fantasy, but reality and this can only happen as a result of not checking your roofs.

Your roofs should be watertight and safe. Once the seal of the roof is penetrated, it should be replaced, because problems could begin and may not be manageable.

6. Don’t Give Dust a Chance

Unfortunately, dust has proven to be unfriendly to material objects and even humans.

In this same vein, we should not give dust a chance in our homes and we can do this by contact cleaning.

The buildup of dust happens where a checkup is not run regularly, and it damages/lowers the lifespan of materials.

Cleaning/getting rid of dust avoids fire outbreaks, allows for a healthy environment and saves money in the long run.

7. Invest in Home Insurance

The benefit of home insurance is to protect your main residence. It covers losses and damage to your property.

In cases where there’s been a fire outbreak, insurance helps to regain or compensate access to/for your lost properties, depending on the type of insurance type you opted for.

Fires, floods, accidents— there’s no shortage of reasons to need home insurance.

8. Set Reminders for Regular Maintenance

Ensure that you set reminders for maintenance in every part of your house and for every reason.

This includes changing air conditioner filters, changing woods and leaks around the roofs, etc…

Put these tips into good use and sell the houses you have today without having to spend excessively.
